Microbudget success boosts nonprofit

The sale of 'Another Earth' to Fox Searchlight has complicated nonprofit Artists Public Domain's bottom line - by turning a profit. *EXCLUSIVE:* Artists Public Domain just scored one of the most profitable sales in the history of Sundance. It's celebrating a 10-year anniversary. But even if you're in the film industry, chances are you've never heard of this nonprofit producer.That's just fine with them. The Gotham-based org spent much of the last decade happily operating under the radar, producing and financing noncommercial projects. But all that changed in January, when Fox Searchlight paid nearly $3 million for worldwide rights to its $150,000 sci-fi love story "Another Earth" out of the Sundance fest. Two months later, Sundance Selects nabbed U.S. rights to its co-production "The Forgiveness of Blood," which landed the Silver Bear screenplay prize in Berlin this year.The success of the company's fourth and fifth features, however, comes with irony: even though the "Earth" budget more than doubled with delivery costs, it still earned nearly 10 times that amount before hitting theaters Friday.But under APD's 501(c)(3) charity rules, none of the filmmakers can profit from it."Our goal was always to make enough money from each production so we could make another one. We never thought about the day where we'd actually have more money than we knew what to do with," says Hunter Gray, who co-founded APD with Tyler Brodie, his partner at for-profit producer Verisimilitude ("Half Nelson")."It's the first time we've ever had a film that's in profit," he explains. "We've never held a fundraiser, we don't have any employees and we have very little overhead. … No one on the board gets paid, and we can never take money out." Filmmakers and some producers can be paid deferred fees in the rare event an APD film makes money, as they will on "Earth," but no one gets traditional profit points.Gray understandably seems a bit surprised that a charitable film org, run solely on donations from Brodie and himself, went from being a side project supporting noncommercial fare to a top indie producer of hot microbudgeted films overnight."Our organization doesn't have the manpower to churn out a bunch of these small films," he says, or to oversee an open submission process awarding grants. "We're hiring our first employee this year, and we're now looking at other ways to benefit filmmakers and the indie film industry as a whole."Brodie and Gray launched APD in 2001 while running their former (for-profit) production outfit, Plantain Films ("The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack"). "We funded a few documentaries at the time, and were trying to figure out a way to keep making them and have it make economic sense," Gray says. "It was Tyler's idea to start a nonprofit and do other things to help filmmakers as well."The pair assembled a board that included themselves, Plantain/Verisimilitude producer Alex Orlovsky ("Blue Valentine"), Journeyman Pictures founder Paul Mezey ("Sugar") and then-IFP exec director Michelle Byrd (since replaced by her IFP successor, Joana Vicente, who also co-owns Open City Films). Starting small, they set themselves up as a supporting org to IFP, giving annual grants for the IFP Market awards lunch, the Gotham Awards' "Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You" prize and general funding.APD donated two editing rooms and small office space to select projects, all funded by Brodie and Gray. "The idea is not to just give a grant," explains Vicente. "It's 'We're going to help you make your film, and if the film doesn't sell, we're going to help get it out there,' whether it's renting theaters or some other form of distribution."Projects arrive via film industry contacts, random submissions and word of mouth, but the board members' busy outside work schedules initially kept feature production on the back burner. "You don't always have the time to support films of that size as a working producer," says Orlovsky. "It's that same 'one for them, one for me' thing that actors do."The bigscreen efforts began in 2008 with Azazel Jacobs' "Momma's Man," a black comedy about a man who moves back in with his parents (played by Jacobs' own mother and father). Like all APD projects, it was brought in and shepherded by a board member (Orlovsky), and the under-$200,000 Kino release made $100,000 in theaters. The experimental mockumentary "Memorial Day" had a limited 2009 release, and niche distrib the Film Desk took the India-based pickpocket drama "Zero Bridge" to a $10,000 theatrical gross this year.What the board members didn't expect --- and no one in the industry could predict --- was the explosion of interest in small films without stars among specialty divisions like Searchlight and Focus. It complicates a very practical question for APD: when is a project commercial or noncommercial?"Just by definition, we can only do projects that wouldn't otherwise get funded by a for-profit," Gray says. "The definition is not hard and fast or budgetary --- there's no criteria you can pin it to. 'Another Earth' was presented to us as three sentences with some footage, and we signed on. The director (Mike Cahill) and lead actress (Brit Marling) started shooting on their own, and wrote it together. It was much easier to look at it then and say this was definitely a nonprofit project."There are no immediate plans for another feature --- right now, the board members are busy recovering from "Earth," Verisimilitude's "Terri" and other projects. A 10th anniversary party is planned for this fall, and plans are in the works to use their Searchlight windfall for the greater good of the industry."In the future, Artists Public Domain is going to focus on ways to create more transparency in the distribution of indie films," Gray says. America's Got Talent question?

who thinks the 11 year old girl on Amerca's Got Talent sounds like

My friend thinks she's a good singer?

She has been taking voice lessons for a year now and she has even done
some concerts with her teacher's other students. But she is just not
good! I mean there is absolutely nothing beautiful about her voice,
and her parents seem to be aware of that too. They're only paying for
those lessons because they see it as a hobby, but my friend thinks
she's very talented and when she gets frustrated with school she says
she will just become a rock star. I just spent an entire week of
holidays with her, and I was so embarrassed, since she would sing in
the street or the bus, or in general when we're in the middle of α
crowd. And she didn't just hum, she sang loud! So I would tell her to
stop because people were disturbed or something like that. What should
I do? I have never told her anything negative about her singing, but I
have also never said anything positive. I try to remain as neutral as
possible, but no one tells her anything! Should I? She is so blinded
that she doesn't even realize the ironic remarks of her father when
she's performing her vocal exercices in front of him. So not even her
parents will tell her! Her teacher is obviously not going to
discourage her either, since there is also money involved. On the
other hand, I don't feel comfortable at all doing it... What do you
suggest?

How much is a used Fender Jazz bass worth?

I'm not sure on the year but its a Fender Jazz bass made in Mexico.
Like new condition (some very minor scratches/dings, but very few) and
it was a little over $600 new. I'm more of a guitar player and need a
new guitar so do you think this is worth $300? I wanna take it around
to different shops but I'm just checking ahead of time. Thank you.

Watch X-Men: First Class For Free

X-Men: First Class is a 2011 American superhero film directed by Matthew Vaughn. Based on the cartoon characters acting in Marvel Comics, it is a prequel to the X-Men film chain. X-Men: First Class was introduced on 06 1, 2011 in the UK and on 06 three in the U . s .. The film is set primarily in 1962 through the Cuban Rocket Crisis and focuses on the connection between Professor X and Magneto and then the origin of their groups, the X-Men together with the Brotherhood of Mutants. The film actresses James McAvoy as Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Magneto. Other solid people include Kevin Bacon, January Jones, Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawrence, Zoë Kravitz, Nicholas Hoult and Lucas Till. The film was principally snapshot in Britain and areas of the usa. At a German concentration camp in occupied Poland in 1944, scientist Dr. Schmidt detects young Erik Lensherr bend a stainless steel gate together with his thoughts when the kid is divided from his families. In a Westchester Region, New York mansion, young telepath Charles Xavier meets homeless young shape-shifter Raven. Overjoyed to fulfill another person "totally different" like him, he invitations her to stay together with his family. Shaw, sporting a helmet that foils Xavier's telepathy, comes with the Soviet fleet to ensure that the rockets arrive, trying to trigger World War III and obtain mutant ascendency. Raven goes to seduce Lensherr, who persuades her to embrace her character as a mutant. After that, McCoy provides Raven his remedy for her look, but she neglects. The remedy backfires on McCoy, making him a leonine colossal. Although self-conscious of his new look, he pilots the mutants and MacTaggert to the blockage line. In an following combat with Shaw, Lensherr takes the helmet for himself, authorizing Xavier to immobilize Shaw. Despite Xavier's objections, Lensherr murders Shaw by forcing the concentration camp coin via his brain. Fearing the mutants, the fleets hearth their rockets at them. In a fight, Xavier holds Lensherr from hurting the fleets with the rockets, but when MacTaggert fires at Lensherr, a deflected bullet strikes Xavier in the spine. Lensherr, remorseful, departs with Mystique, Angel, Riptide and Azazel. A wheelchair-sure Xavier and the mutants return back to the mansion, the place he expects to create a school. MacTaggert guarantees to never show his address and they kiss; at the Central intelligence agency shortly after, she reports she has no clear memory of recent events. Lensherr, in a uniform with the helmet and labeling himself Magneto, smashes Frost from confinement.

I need to find out what the film title this is... Help?

I remember watching a film before, few years ago... About some lift
thing... And the people went into this white room, and there was a
trolley with a dead person covered up on it, white sheet on top, one
arm hanging out... Not so much a horror, think it could be a family
kind of horror film. I can't really say much else, because the film
has only just come to mind... But suggestions of what the film could
be like would help. Oh another thing... I think there was a black man
in the film... not being racist... And he was going round this house
thing...

Why do people keep calling "28 Days Later" a zombie movie?

I even saw someone list "The Crazies" as a zombie flick. There is a
huge difference between a viral infection and being a zombie. Both
"28'' and "Crazies" were about people becoming infected with something
that drove them insane, turning them into homicidal maniacs. It
didn't kill them then resurrect their lifeless body!
I think people have forgotten the original concept that George Romero
created. Zombies existed before him, but they were the product of
"voodoo" and normally under the control of someone else. Romero's
zombies didn't even have to be bitten, or "infected". The recently
dead just rose up. If you died, by whatever means, you came back as a
mindless zombie. Somehow this has transformed into thinking, running
zombies. I understand the evolution of a concept, but when the
original idea completely disappears, the new "creatures" deserves a
new name.
I just wanted people's input on this. Do you agree or disagree? If
you think "28 Days Later" (or "Weeks Later") deserves inclusion into
the zombie genre, please tell me why.
Just because you get "infected" with something, that doesn't make you
a zombie. A zombie is DEAD! The people in "28'' were not. You could
just shoot them in the heart and they would die, and not rise again.
An infected person = Alive. Zombie = Dead. See the difference?

Me and my mate are camping out 3 nights before because this is the
last one and we are not taking any chances on not being at the front.
I have found out that 3 other people are camping out as long as we
are. Is anyone else on here going to?

and if you have any information on how the whole premiere thing works
like apparantly we get wristbands or something :P lol that would be
great thanks.
